Introducing writing dialog?

I need to introduce writing dialog to second graders. I am in my methods courses in college but I need to teach a lesson to a real class. The students have to write about a bug of choice (tied with science) but the language arts aspect is to write using dialog. Any ideas??? Thanks.

If I were faced with the same situation, I think I’d start off with an example dialogue:

Tom: “Hey, Ben! Look what I found!”

Ben: “What is it?”

Tom: “I think it’s a spider.”

Ben: “Wow, that looks scary! Can it bite?”

Tom: “I don’t think so. But I wouldn’t like to find out!”

Ben: “Where did you find it?”

Tom: “In that tree. I think it lives there. I wonder what it eats?”

Ben: “Children?!”

I think something like that would cover all the bases, and I think the students would relate to it, and hopefully even find it funny!

Once they have seen a sample, they should find it easier to make up their own dialogues, with supervision.

Good luck.
