If I want to go into teaching, what preparation should I do in undergraduate school?

I won’t be majoring in Education, but in something similar to psychology/human development.

Most states require a Master’s in Education, so your undergrad degree won’t matter too much. Depending on what you want to teach (i.e. high school history), you probably want to major in that subject or specialty. If you want to teach early ed (k-6), any undergrad degree will do. Majoring in development, especially early development will help you better understand the theories taught to new teachers.

You really should major in education if you are planning to enter teaching because each state requires certification in education to obtain your license.

Although many states offer alternative routes, in which you get an undergrad degree in a subject area then complete a Transition to Teaching program (most do so while working on their masters in education). But these do cost much more than completing a regular 4-year education bachelor’s degree because it is an accelerated master’s program.

To teach psychology or human development, consider majoring in social studies education OR family and consumer science (FACS). If you major in both and are certified in both, you are highly attractive to schools because they get 2 teachers for the price of 1.
