Has anyone taught english over seas?

If so where? what course did you take? Did you have a degree? was it hard to find a job? Do you think CELTA is the best course?

Did you speak the language in that country? What is the best country to teach English abroad?

Any information will help! Thank You.

Yes for about 4 years!

China, S. Korea, Thailand, and the Czech Republic

I took TEFLWORLDWIDE in Prague-(TEFL Certificate)they have a pretty good program-I wish I’d taken it before my 13 months in Korea but oh well. And ECCThailand in Bangkok(CELTA Certificate) -an extremely challenging program that really tests you! Make sure you do EVERYTHING they say. JOBS ABROAD for EFL/ESL teachers are plentiful. Finding “good and legitmate” jobs is the tricky part. I’ve taken classes for the TESOL but didn’t finsh them, the TEFL and CELTA and I think the CELTA’s awesome. Be sure to know something about the country you’re teaching in BEFORE your program so they can answer specific questions like”How to deal with classes of 60 children?” and “What if all I was given to teach with is a room and no materials except a broken chalkboard?” Yes, limited language knowlege when I got there, intermediate when I left. The country that’s best depends on how much you’re willing to saccrifice.

I’ve been teaching English (EFL) in Korea for 10 years. You only need a BA (Any major) to teach in a Korean public school or private institute (called a “hakwon” in Korean). If you want to work in a university you need a MA.

You don’t need to know how to speak Korean. Often foreign teachers will have a Korean helper who is bilingual.

If you come to Korea, do your research. Find a reputable school. Check out Dave’s ESL cafe.

I know of two people who have taken the CELTA course. They said it was very intensive and the instructors were very strict but they did get a lot from the program (managing students, organizing the classroom, effectively teaching)

Good luck!
