should cell phones be allowed at school?

its been a problem at my school so I’m just wondering what other people think about it. I think it should/shouldn’t i mean, the main reason schools don’t let you bring them 2 school because its a distraction. If teachers set guidelines like use it only during lunch and break, keep it on silent, then it wouldn’t be a problem. I can see why teachers wouldn’t allow it in the classroom because students can cheat, plus if it rings everyone pays attention 2 that. I’m also asking this cause i need to write an essay about it.What do you think about this problem?

I don’t think it is necessary. If there is an emergency and the student needs to be contacted then parents or whoever can ring the school and the message will get passed to the student anyway. Other reasons its not good is because phones are always getting stolen, they distract you from your studies!!! and you will run up a bigger phone bill. Phones are ok for when you go out on the weekend but its just another nuisance at school, another thing to carry around and have to look after all the time so it won’t get taken or so someone else won’t use it and run up a big bill for you too. Its just not necessary as before mobile phones were introduced thousands of students coped perfectly well without them !!

Times are changing and technology mover forward ever faster.

Not that long ago this same question was being asked about pocket caculators, should we allow students to use them in exams?, of course we all know the result of that debate. A cell phone is a communications device not ideally suited to learning and as such has no place in everyday school life, unlike the computer which has revolultionised education. The cell is a distraction to concentration and often a nuisance to others.

I would vote against it.

Of course it has its place in childrens pockets these days due to secutity issues and also working parents who cannot always meet or be home when the child finishes school, but it should remain switched OFF while the child is inside the school gates.

School is (or should be) a safe and secure environment for children to be educated on a face to face basis with their teachers, as such there is no need for cell communications in school at all.

I don’t have a problem with cell phones being at school, but I do not think that students should be allowed to talk or text during class. I think that would just be plain rude and disrespectful not to mention the cheating thing! I can’t help but wonder if things might have been different at Columbine if some kids had cells phones dialing 911.

As a teacher, I think that cell phones should not be allowed in schools. They are easy to cheat with, distracting, and have the potential to be targets for thieves, leading to violence.

Any emergency is dealt with through school personnel; the children have nothing to do with that process. Children (even teens) do not understand emergency protocol. For example, in a code yellow (lockdown), a student with a cell phone could get herself killed by a jumpy terrorist who sees/hears her using it.

There is no legitimate reason for students to have cell phones on campus.

I believe that cell phones SHOULD be allowed on the school premises by students.

My reason being is that with all the school shootings going on these days, kids should be able to immediately have access to dial 911 in such a situation. Yes, cell phones can be distracting and rules need to be set forth, but the bottom line is that in an emergency situation you need to have them.
