I work as a toddler teacher in a day care center. Would I be considered a teacher as much?
as the teachers in the schools are? I am thinking so. Also do you think I am better off working this job that is a five minute drive from my house than getting a higher paying job as a teacher in the school system that would require me to drive thirty to forty miles to work every day. I make ten dollers an hour now but I know the teacher job would pay more but the gas would cost and the wear on my car also. What do you all think? Thanks. 🙂

You’d be considered a teacher in the field of ECE: Early Childhood Education. It has less status & prestige than teachers of older students, but that may not matter to you…

You are not considered a teacher, but a care provider. You have to consider the pros and cons of working in a school system. If you are currently working with toddlers then you are employed all year round. I work in Junior High – the salary is much higher than yours, but I don’t get paid 2 months a year. Public schools offer brilliant insurance at an affordable cost, so you may want to consider all your options. First you would have to get your teaching degree and license.

Do you have a degree in education? Have you passed teacher exams for your state? If not, you are not considered a teacher. As to a higher paying job, you need to ask yourself what kind of career can you have at the day care. Can you ever be director? Is there a way to improve your income where you are now? Teachers with more years experience and advanced degrees earn more money. There doesn’t seem to be much advancement in a day care center.

You are not considered a teacher, but please do not take that as a knock. You do important work. I would say to do whatever you can to become a teacher… if you need to finish your BA, do so, and get a credential and work in a classroom.
The reason I say this is, because you are not considered a teacher (to the school) you have no job security. A new supervisor could come in and you could be let go for no reason. Teachers have a contract. try to get this.
good luck to you@!
