I hate teaching! What should I do if this is all I know how to do? I can not do 24 more years before I retire.

I was in the same situation as you. I decided to leave the school that was making me so unhappy. I applied to several different school systems. I was offered several jobs. I was very picky, checking out the administration, faculty, and student body before I even interviewed. I accepted a job that fit my own philosophy of education and my requirements for administrative support for teachers and students. I then volunteered to be on the school’s advisory committee so that I could have meaningful input and speak my mind about what teachers and students need from administration to be sucessful. The move made all the difference in the world. I stayed there happy until I retired.

You don’t hate teaching. You said you like teaching, and you dislike the unnecssary drama. You hate what you’ve had to do in classrooms. Get out of that situation. Change schools or grades, whichever is possible. Keep checking job postings in your board. Ninth grade is tough everywhere, but in some schools it’s easier than others.

Since you said that you teach reading, why not try to get regular, or advanced, or enriched English programmes? Or, if you can, try another subkect area. Even an inner city school must have some decent regular or enriched programmes.

Have you thought of teaching at college or university level? That might be an option.

If none of that works, try for a school that does ESL., and perhaps at the adult level. Last year, I was in a tough inner city-style elementary school; this year I’m in a fantastic high school, and doing Grade 9!.I hate the elementary , but I love the high school. Watch the postings – there is hope!

Good luck.

Get into another district!

I’m on school #3 (in 10 years), and it’s much better. I switched from urban to suburban, and my life is less chaotic as a result. I was getting burnt out.

Consider a different age group, or subject area.

I don’t know where you are teaching, but in Michigan, you can take out your pension investment and invest it elsewhere if you leave teaching. Also, you can work in other areas (administrative, community college, etc). So if it’s holding you back, try finding another way to keep earning towards your pension. Also – can you buy service years?? We can buy up to five years.

In the meantime, phone it in. Save your sanity. The problem is much bigger than the solution you can provide.

Teachers have valuable skill sets that are transferrable to a number of different careers, or expanded into the type of teaching that really satisfies you.

Pinpoint EXACTLY what you don’t like about teaching as it is a broad statement. The hours? The kids? Developing the curriculum? The other teachers? If you are teaching 3rd grade, maybe try older children, or even adults (who may appreciate the chance at education more).

Many corporations have training departments that hire teachers as they have experience with presenting and can typically organize a curriculum well. I’ve also met teachers who moved onto jobs like selling textbooks to Boards of Education, or even working for the yearbook company (as she discovered the opening through the rep who had been calling on her journalism class).

Best of luck to you!

You don’t need 65 thousand, unless you want to live in the same area. You could easily change school systems, take a cut, but rent will probably be cheaper. Do you know that areas that may pay you 45,000 have apartments of equal to better quality for 500 a month, some even cheaper.

Or, of course you can become an administrator.

What about going into an administrative job? Are you wanting to get out of the school world altogether? If so, while you are still working, take night courses toward a new career. What else are you interested in? There is no law that says you have to do the same thing your whole life.

Remeber, that you are setting an example for other people. If you hate teaching alot of them probably 90% out of 100 like school. Do you know that maybe to who you teach you might be their favorite teacher EVER? I am still in grade school but want to become a teacher. If you don’t like the people you teach than switch schools! Maybe. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep an eye on your district job postings. Many times a teacher can transfer to Central Office or a specialty area. Not only do you owe this to yourself but you owe it to your students. Kids know when a teachers has lost heart and it’s not fair to them.

If you really do hate teaching, do yourself a favor and get out. This job just isn’t worth it if you’re not enjoying it.

If you are just a bit burnt out, try a different grade or even a different school. I’m on my 3rd school and really loving it.

well first of all, most 9th graders are going thru puberty. they have mood swings, girls are jus starting there periods, there all a bit bleh. why not try 2nd graders. 9th graders are trying to be popular and impress their friends. i would NEVER want to teach mddle-highschool. i love teaching 3rd graders. maybe 1 bad kid every 3 years or so. VERY easy!! so, go for it!!
