It is unusual for a professor to take you under their wing while they are teaching a class that you are in, but no harm, no foul if you ask the question. Once you complete a course, you could certainly ask straight out without there being a conflict of interest with the other students. If you intend to major in the field that your admired professor is in, that will help. Good luck.
