Do I have Learning Disability??

i recently started my freshman year at a private high school.

Im having trouble at my biology, and world civiliz class. I have no idea what the teachers say when their teaching the class. I would always drift off somewhere & not pay attention when they talk cuz i just dont understand what there trying to teach me. Then there would be the tests and assignments i have to do & i would always fail them. I can read but i dont understand certain words and big words when im reading from the textbooks/assignments.

Throughout my public elementary & middle school years, I had to take this program called ‘ESL’ (english second language) since im half asian & having trouble with my english language. The teachers always helped me with my homework and stuff & sometimes they would give me the answers when i just dont get it. I also scored 3rd grade reading level last year.

At the school im attending, they dont have ESL. I feel so dumb when im with the other students cuz their all so smart.

I don’t think you have a learning disability I think you a have language barrier problem. You can’t learn because you litteraly cannot inderstand what they are saying. My suggestion is that you get a private English tutor or purchase software called The Roseta Stone in the English version it can teach you English very well. I hope you do good in your studies because freahman year is important and I know how you feel with this new environment because I’m a sophmore. I feel like it was just yesterday when I was freshman. You’ll make it.

You need to get your reading and vocabulary up.

You do own a dictionary don’t you. Look up the big words in the book in the dictionary.

The learning disability you have is that you were crippled by the previous school system who took you around in a wheel chair instead of trying to get you off crutches.

You are a 16 year old who still uses training wheels on their bicycle.

Sorry to be blunt but you will be incapable of functioning in THIS society as much as I would if I got plunked down in Bejing tomorrow and had to read a menu in Chinese.

You will be incapable of getting a driver license, filling out a job application, working at any job that doesn’t just require you to clear tables (bussing) filing a tax return without paying H&R Block $150

So you need to get your readings skill up and get ready to drop the training wheels.

You’re not dumb, you’re just behind and it comes from other people helping you do your work instead of teaching you to do it for yourself.

i’m an international student myslef and i learn english back home through video games and music and dont have any problem but when its comes to read it really hard for me ,i read slower than the others and that dose not mean they are smart or anything it just their first language i think if these classes were in your first language you would not have any problem.

to improve your reading skills try to read novels as many as you can the one that you like first three or four novels you might face some dificulties but after that you might enjoy it

note:you have to use the dictionary every time when you dont know the meaning of any words

thats it and good luck

It’s not a learning disability, it’s you don’t know enough vocabularies. If you scored 3rd grade reading level, I suggest you read LOTS from now on. Or it’s only going to get worst for you as you progress in high school.

dont mean to be harsh, but learning english is hard – if you didn’t apply yourself back then, then you certainly are not going to understand basic english now.

best advice – pay attention, get some focus factor – if you’re not paying attention it doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it means you’re not willing. and if you don’t understand certain words don’t just give up on the assignment. that’s why we had dictionaries, you’ve got to put forth the effort.

It is not a disability, it is your language level. There is a huge difference between conversational language and academic language.

read, read, read

You can improve your level greatly by constantly reading.

good luck!

Are you trying your very best? I think you might just be a heavy daydreamer. Try your best and pay attention before considering if you have a learning disability or not.
