how are american school holidays structured?

I live in italy and I can’t understand when american students go on holiday…can you help me?thank you!

We have one long (2 month) holiday in the summer. I live in the north, so that holiday begins ~June 20 and ends ~August 20. In the south, that holiday may begin ~May 20 and end ~July 20.

Then, we usually have a vacation at the end of December (1 or 2 weeks), usually from the 23rd to January 2nd.

My school gives one week off in February and another week off in April; some schools combine those weeks into one 2 week vacation, frequently known as “Spring Break.”

We also have no school on federal holidays (Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc.)

There are the traditional schools that have a long 2 month break in the summer (the exact dates differ). Then, in many large cities, there are “year-round schools” also called “multi-track”. The student body is divided into “tracks.” The track will go to school for 9 weeks, then get 3 weeks off. At the school, one track is always off at any one time.

If you feel confused, it’s because some kids are in school during the summer. It was the only way the schools could handle all the students.

Schools vary slightly, but most offer holidays–

June, July, August (summer break- children go back and advance to next level in September)

December (2 weeks) Christmas Break, New Years

November (1 week) Thanksgiving –American holiday

March (1 week) Spring Break

In this country, you must be five to start Kindergarten and each district has differing cut off dates. Where we live, its September 30th. So for example, my daughter will be 17 this year and she’s a junior. Next year she will turn 18 in December and be in her last year of high school. So, I believe most seniors are 17, but those with awkward birthdays (at the end of the calendar year) would be older. So you will be the same age, but we would call it 12th grade, because kinder is not one. First grade is one.
