Do I need a college degree to obtain a English teaching job in Brazil or will the ESL/TESOL course be enough?

I am in military now but will be taking a ESL/TESOL course very soon. I also have 48 credits of college. I was wondering if Ill need a 4 yr degree also to teach in Brazil

If you really want a reputable and well-paid teaching position, a degree is a must.

Otherwise you can do without.

If it is anything like the English teaching sytem in Europe, you do not need a college degree although it might help you get the job. Let’s put it this way, the education system in those two countries are completely different anyway. A degree you got in the US would not mean anything in other parts of the world. I would suggest contacting schools in Brazil that teach English and ask them what they would look for in a teacher. I think they would be more excited if you spoke Portuguese than had a degree.

A foreigner in Brazil faces an uphill battle in breaking into ANY profession. Unless you have a specific invitation from a Brazilian institution, the best you can realistically hope for without a college degree is to pick up some odd-job bits and pieces here and there (private tutoring, for example). But be prepared for abysmally low pay in a country where labor is the cheapest thing there is. Also, keep in mind that in Brazil anyone on a tourist visa is prohibited from earning money while in the country.
