Anyone know anything about People to People?

I’m a junior in high school and I was invited to go on the British and Irish Heritage trip. I’ve talked to someone from People to People and might be switching to another trip. But I want to know if the trip is worth the $6,000 that I’ll be paying. I’ve heard some people say that they don’t do background checks on the adults that accompany the students and they don’t treat the students particularly well. Is this true?

I went to New Zealand and Australia for People to People and loved it. It was worth the price, and was treated perfectly. It took place the summer before my 8th grade. The preparation and activities prior to the trip were done nicely as well.

I do not think it is worth that kind of money. P2P is a glorified vacation trip (and you’d be amazed an the number of people “selected” to go on one!).

For the $6,000 they want, you could pay for a very large portion of a year’s exchange trip. This would have numerous more benefits than the P2P experience, including language and culture immersion. Many colleges and universities offer preferred admissions and sometimes scholarship monies to former exchange students.

Additionally, you would have the advantage of knowing another language, which is VERY valuable in the work force.

Would you have fun on the P2P trip? Undoubtedly. Are there better ways to spend your money? Yes.

Your high school counselor should have information on real exchange programs. Or you can find the organizations certified to operate in the U.S. at www.csiet.org.

The site www.exchangestudentworld.com also has a lot of information. It’s written by exchange students for exchange students.

Good Luck!
