Is an SAT score of 1740 good?

It’s out of 2400

Also, how good would my chances to get into NYU be?…I have a high school overall average of 91% (not sure about the GPA) and 1740 on SAT.

1740 is about average, but NYU considers application essay, reccomendations, rigor of secondary school record, and academic gpa to be VERY important admission factors. Next, would be the IMPORTANT admission factors: character/personal qualities, class rank, extracurricular activities, standardized test scores, and talent/ability. Honestly, there are many factors and it depends on the student. Usually, how interested are you in NYU (is it your top choice), what do you think NYU can do for you as well as what you think you can add to NYU. In addition, don’t forget to overlook the requirements for admission: essay(s), SAT or ACT with writing, and two SAT subject Tests (SAT II), but if you’re planning to major in an art or music related field, you don’t necessarily have to worry about the SAT IIs being required of you for admission.

Overall, if you can give a thorough explanation of NYU being your top choice and have done well in school and helped in the community, sometimes tests aren’t so important and sometimes they are.

It depends on you yourself and for some, test scores don’t define a person, don’t determine your life.

If NYU is just a thought, here’s a thought: there ARE other colleges out there that can be just as good.

The SAT range for NYU is 1210-1410 on reading and math for the middle 50% of those accepted. So for 2400, you would want to have an average score of 1965. With your score, you would be in the bottom quartile if accepted. However, scores for certain schools within NYC are probably higher or lower. The business school is more competitive that some of the others. So, a lot depends on your major.

What counts for high school is your class rank. Ask your guidance counselor for your class rank. At NYU 67% are in the top 10% of their class. If you are not a desired minority student or a legacy candidate, you will want to make sure that you are in the top 10% of students.

Many high schools have grade inflation. For some of those schools, the majority of students will be between 90 and 100%. It is possible in those schools to have a 91% but only be in the top 25% or 33% of the class.

If you are really good at academics, take several AP courses, review AP test prep books and score a 4 or 5 on the test. That will really show that you can function at the top of your class.

1740 is okay…average. NYU is a pretty good school so you might need a high SAT score maybe 1800 or more.

SAT- okay GPA- good… if you are weighted on 4.0- BUT… if you are on a 6.0, that’s extremely bad. Can you get in good colleges? Can you? Depends on how you go about it, young one. Like it or not, the junk you’ve heard your entire life from your parents, teachers, and counselors is actually true. So, decide that for yourself.
