Studying for a placement test is like studying for a pregnancy test. However much you might wish to be pregnant (or not) or found competent (or not), you’re much better off just finding out how you do without “fiddling with” the test.
Suppose you study and do well and “pass” the placement test. Then you are placed into, let’s say, calculus and fail because you don’t know functions and trigonometry. You’d have been much better off taking the test “cold” and being placed in precalculus to begin with.
A few days or weeks of studying might change your score, but they won’t change your real level of knowledge. If you don’t know how to read, write or do math at a freshman college level, it’s better, cheaper and less distressing to fix those things before taking real freshman courses.
