CLEP vs. AP Testing – Are CLEPs easier?

Hello,

I recently got my scores for AP testing this spring. Much to my dismay, I received only a 3 on AP US history (after thinking I had bagged an easy 5.)

I’m getting a minor in history, and it’s imperative that I begin my series of electives soon… I’d rather not spend time taking basic US History courses when I’ve already beat them to death in High School.

Would it be worth it to try and CLEP out of these courses? I’ve heard CLEPs are easier. Have you taken a CLEP, or both CLEP and AP? What do you think?

I have taken both and CLEPs are much easier. They are a good solution for you, and not just in US History and Western Civ.

While you are at it, look at the DANTES history exams, which are in more specialized topics, but first check if the universities in which you are interested accept them.

I’m not completely sure on the CLEP status. For the AP, I know that will take the place of an introductory course, in your case Biology, in college and provide you with the appropriate hours. The SAT Subject Test will be useful if you’re trying to apply to a college that focuses around science or if your degree is going to be science based. Both AP and SAT Subject Tests will save money because the AP takes the place of at least 1 semester of the class and the Subject Test will likely gain the attention of possible Science scholarship donors. I’ve heard of the CLEP vaguely but I don’t know specifics about it.

First, I’d do the research on whether your college will accept CLEP grades. Many colleges don’t, or just accept them in specific subjects, because they don’t feel that the tests are hard enough. Then, try to set up an appointment to take the tests you need to take during this summer, and study a bit before you take them.

I haven’t taken CLEP before, but I think you won’t be stuck writing any essays on the test. It’ll just be multiple choice. Therefore, it should be a little easier. However, I think that you will be stuck taking to CLEPs for US History (one is earlier history, and one is later history).
