Ages for school – this may be a silly question!?

Hi, I’m expecting my first child and I have searched and searched on the Internet to find a timeline of the appropriate age for each stage in school. For example, you begin kindengarden at age X, then elementary at age Y, then ___ etc…all the way to high school or college. Does anyone know or know of a link to a reliable website?

Thanks! 🙂

A lot of elementary schools have “preschools” incorporated in their building. Generally, kids start preschool at 3 or 4, depending on their development and your discretion.

Then, kids start kindergarten at 5… a few that are “behind” start at 6, again, parent’s discretion.

Your most reliable information will come from the school district in which you live.

In my area, the kindergarten teachers have a list of what a child is expected to know before they start school. This includes practicalities like being able to tie their own shoes and go to the bathroom by themselves.

Do a little investigation… you have plenty of time, but if you start now, you’ll be more informed. It will also allow you time to get to know employees in various preschools… and possibly provide you volunteer opportunities inside the elementary school itself.

As far as the older grades are concerned, well, I think you should focus on your pregnancy and the joy of your baby to come. You have lots of time to figure it out – and you will, we all learn as we go. But here’s a bit more…

The age of your child entering junior high and high school depends not only on their performance and your decision rather they should move on or not, but the school system itself.

Here, kids enter middle school in 6th grade and high school in 9th. In the neighboring town, kids enter junior high in 7th and high school in 10th.

Congratulations and good luck!

Most school districts have a cut-off date for when a child must turn 5 before they start Kindergarten. For example here it is Oct. 31 (which means for 1st grade they have to be 6 by Oct. 31). So a child must turn 5 before that date to start Kindergarten that year, so that means some kids start Kindergarten at the age of 4. My daughter’s birthday is in November, so that meant she was actually almost six when she started Kindergarten, because she had barely missed the cutoff to turn 5 the year before. Most schools will not force you to start your kid as early as 4 or if they barely turned 5, I know people who waited that extra year even if they made the cut-off so they ended up sending their 6 year old to Kindergarten. My daughter’s kindergarten teacher told me that is actually better if a child will turn 6 at some point during the Kindergarten year rather than barely turning 5 because they are just so much more ready to learn. Hope I helped.

Depends on your state, contact your local school district. Also remember that just because starting age is five, doesn’t mean your child is ready emotionally or mentally. Relax and enjoy the years you have before school. Right now, your mom and teacher and Friend. Once school starts, that will all change.

Most kids start kindergarden at age 4-5, more 5 i guess. It sorat depends on where you live. Preschool can start really at any age, after your baby can walk and talk

Well, I guess anyone who attended public / private school should know it.

K- 4-6

1st- 6

2nd-7

3rd- 8

& so on.

These are general ages. (approximate)

It all depends on what day your 5th birthday is on… I mean, what month.

It also depends on what your states’ mandatory attendance law says.

Some states are 5, some are 7.
