I saw your other questions, so one thing to note is that you shouldn’t assume a child has a learning disability just because s/he doesn’t do well in school. If a child has emotional problems s/he can have trouble learning too.

There are different types of learning disabilities. One is dyslexia, and that, as you probably know, is when people don’t see the letters on the page correctly. A teacher who specializes in teaching dyslexic students can help. I believe Cher and Jay Leno are dyslexic, and Jay Leno graduated college.

There are “mysterious” learning disabilities that nobody really can quite figure out the cause of. Here’s a link to an article I have on Associated Content about that type of learning disability (and a problem I had with my son).

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/283125/what_parents_need_to_know_about_learning.htm

The article is “What Every Parent Needs to Know About Learning Disabilities.” The article contains a link to www.zerotothree.org as well.

As any adult who has ever had severe stress, grief, or even some head injuries can tell you, there are times when we just can’t concentrate when we try to read. That’s what a learning disability is like for a child. They try and try, but the information just won’t “stick to their brain”. Its as if they can’t concentrate.

Some children have ADD, which makes focusing on one thing difficult. Others have ADHD, which, as you may know, means they’re also “hyperactive”.

When children can’t learn in the early school years they can lose ground and never catch up. They may feel stupid or embarrassed to think “everyone knows” they can’t do the work that other kids do.

Associated Content has lots of “plain talk” articles about learning disabilities, so you may want to look at some of them. too.

Children with learning disabilities commonly have problems with the following:

Visual motor integration – Difficulty with transferring visual or auditory information to written language. They need to have a desk copy of this information.

Visual and auditory process disorders – Difficult with speed of processing information or manipulating information in their brains.

Visual and auditory memory disorders – Difficulty with storage of information presented in these ways. Usually auditory memory deficits cause the most problems. All verbals need to be supported visually.

Language disorders – Difficulty with receptive or expressive language. May not understand what is said to them or may not be able to express what they think.

There are more, but these are some on the most common learning disabilities.

Some children with learning disability have short attention span, they can not focus or concentrate long enough in classes.
