i know teachers who have been teaching elementary school for a long time (30+ years) and make about $70,000. As for high school I know that science and math teachers are in high demand and could start by making $50,000. But it varies by state, and city. I know that states in New England have the highest paid teachers, whereas if you took a job in the innercity you would be making an embarrassingly low amount of money. It’s not right, in my opinion, teachers should be making a lot more.

Salaries vary by state, the northeastern states definitely pay more (I’ve taught in NY, NJ, PA and CA). Though keep in mind that teaching is not as easy as people often try to make it. There is more ‘vacation time’, but you’ll find yourself grading papers, writing lessons, and just generally working even when you’re not at work. It’s a noble profession, but not an easy one.

Oh… if there is a particular area you’re interested in teaching in, most districts have their pay scales available on their websites. Unlike most jobs, there is little room for negotiating at the public school level. Salary is based on years of teaching and education.

Median annual earnings of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers range from $41,400 to $45,920; the lowest 10 percent earn $26,730 to $31,180; the top 10 percent earn $66,240 to $71,370. Median earnings for preschool teachers are $20,980.

According to the American Federation of Teachers, beginning teachers with a bachelor’s degree earn an average of $31,704. The estimated average salary of all public elementary and secondary school teachers is $46,597. Private school teachers generally earn less than public school teachers, but may be given other benefits, such as free or subsidized housing.

Teachers can boost their salary in a number of ways. In some schools, teachers receive extra pay for coaching sports and working with students in extracurricular activities. Getting a master’s degree or national certification often results in a raise in pay, as does acting as a mentor. Some teachers earn extra income during the summer by teaching summer school or performing other jobs in the school system.

The pay is awesome. In my state the average salary is$45,000 a year. That includes every weekend off, no all nighters, Christmas break, Spring break, snow days, heat days, and three dang months off in the summer. That probably averages out about $125.00 an hour.

Should’ve became a teacher.

Depends on which state, but the pay pretty much stinks… parents trust their children to teachers and police but both professions are way under paid. I have been teaching 32 years… I have a PhD and my yearly salary is about $55,000
