Where did the saying “He loves me? He loves me not? come from and why a Daisy?

It has something to do with the old saying that ‘you can torture a daisy and daisies still won’t tell’ and the small, limited number of petals are east to pull off one by one… also they are not always odd or even in number so the answer is always a surprise.
