what doest the “our deepest fear? quote mean?

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

As a teacher, I see it in school in the child who refuses to work. He might be afraid to fail, but what if he did really well? He’d be *expected* to do well from then on. Things would change. He’d have to work harder, longer, in order to meet those new expectations. And if he fell, well – he’d fall from a greater height than before, and it would hurt a lot more. Most people’s fear of power overcomes their desire for it.

But “playing small” helps no one, least of all yourself. You can’t do good in the world by playing small, by doing the minimum required. The best thing one can do is as Einstein said: find the job or task in life that is just barely within your reach – that makes you strive every day – that highlights your talents and abilities, while constantly making you stretch for more – and do it whole-heartedly.

That’s too hard for many people.

But, as the last line says, when you see someone living that life, it changes you. You can’t interact with someone like that and not feel any change; it’s infectious.

It means to be true to yourself, and unafraid of all that entails.

Honestly, the quote isn’t something easily explained. You pretty much either get it or you don’t. Deep down, each of us finds comfort in believing that our lives don’t matter, or that everything is beyond our control. At some point, we all “grow up” and impose limitations on ourselves; while our capacities are in reality limited, most of us live far within the real limitations, bounded by those we impose on ourselves which we create and accept in order to fit in with those around us. When we break those barriers, others may follow and break their own.

It means that each person is a unique expression of the divine. That boldly allowing yourself to shine in all areas of your life is bound to bring a lot of attention and reaction your way. You will be responsible for making choices at all the oportunities you’re presented with. It means that it’s scary having to be a leader and representative of your life, without excuses, hesitation or denials.

I like the above quote. I’ve agreed with that perspective for a long time now. Care to cite it?

I don’t like that quote because somewhere in there I think it means if we really reach our high levels we think that we won’t be able to handle it. Not a great message.

How about do our best, make tough goals and enjoy the fruits when we get there?

I think that is what God wants for us too – to shine.

We are each a person created in the image of God. And we fear calling attention to that fact. How many times do we succumb to peer pressure to do something bad or stupid, to join in picking on others, fall into pettiness to be accepted. But it’s only when we step up, to reject the draw to sin, to embrace what God has intended us to be as he created us in his own perfection, that we give others the courage to do the same. And to take that step up, to stand against the current – it’s hard and it takes work. It’s much easier to flow with the river.
