According to the Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, ineluctable comes from the French root in – eluctari – to struggle out; that which is inescapable. Modality has so many meanings that the best Oxford English Dictionary concise definition is: “Those aspects of a thing which relate to its mode, or manner or state of being, as distinct from its substance or identity.”
