Would you support a law to eliminate Home Work for students.?

I thought it was the teacher’s job to teach, not send a bunch of stuff home so the students’ parents can do thier job.. I wish I could send my work to school and have them do some of it. The students are there long enough, why cant they either be taught in school and free to run and romp when they get home. or make the school hours shorter, with study hall with tutors to do the homework?

Alright as a junior in high school i would love to support this, but I can’t. Homework is necessary whether we like it or not. We need to reinforce what we’ve learned in class and yes occasionally we will receive a new chapter for homework, but the material is always gone over during class the next day. I think its a good skill to develop a bit of self teaching so long as it is then reviewed by the teacher to insure accuracy. Study halls are available to kids and teachers are present, whether or not students take advantage of the study opportunities available to them is another story.

I was a bit offended when you said something along the lines that kids who get good grades then there parents must be doing some of the work! Totally untrue. I maintain my grades on my own without parental involvement other then them occasionally picking a book up at the library on their way home. I think most students, like myself, are responsible enough to handle our homework without mom and dad having to do it for us. If we can’t manage the homework we receive then there is no way we will be able to handle college later.

Um… No. Homework is very important for a child to do. Teachers do teach but the learning starts at home. And it will always start at home. In fact, a child is always learning constantly whether they are in school or not.

Teachers are there for guidance to make sure students are taught correctly about the general information. It is the parents responsibility to continue and reinforce the learning process at home. Teachers do not live at your home 24/7 so what happens at home is up to you- the parent. Plus, the child should be doing their own work, not you.

Don’t be impatient about having your child’s homework to done by dinnertime and/or don’t let the child be discourage about not being able to solve a problem right away. You have to let them think. A child won’t learn if they always ask for help. If they are frustrated then, have them go back to the problem at a later time.

Don’t teach your child to be a slacker at an early age.

Try a rewarding system when they answer a difficult question like giving them ice cream after dinner or a trip to the park. It doesn’t have to be big as long as the child know they are being rewarded for doing their own work.

Also, children should be lucky to have a free education in the US. Some children in other parts of the world have to pay to go to school and they usually are there until 7pm at night.

But if it bothers you that much, you should invest in tutor.

First, the homework sent home IS for the student, not the parent. If you are doing your child’s home work, then there is something wrong with your view on how things should be handled in your home.

Second, teachers send homework home so that the student can actually learn things on their own, not have the teacher hold their hand the whole way through school. Homework promotes thought provoking intentions to the student’s mind.

Third, if the student does not wish to do the homework, or any other work, how is that suppose to prepare him for the real world? Is your child going to live with you for the rest of his/her life? Are you going to do everything for him/her? Are you never going to teach him/her values, or Morals, or anything else that will help him/her be dependent so they can function in the real world?

All I am saying is that in my opinion things are done the way they are because it is intended to benefit the student. There are many factors involved with teaching (granted some school structures are not perfect) and it all ties into preparing our children for a brighter future. You can help aid this direction by trying to be positive instead of being negative. Help your child grow into the person they can and should be.

Your talking about HOME WORK, it’s been going on since the 1st school ever opened. When was the last time you walked into a school. It teaches 1. study habits. 2. working independently.

The problem with PARENTS they care LESS about what the child does, as long as they are not bothering them. That is why there is so much child abuse out there. The kids turn to Gangs, because they feel WANTED, and have someone WHO CARES.

It doesn’t hurt a child to do homework at home, it is supposed to put parent and child together for a different learning experience.

No I’m not a teacher, I’m a mother of 5 boys. Loved working with them on their homework.

No. Homework provides key reinforcement that is unavailable in class. Having children think about things again several hours after it’s been taught helps transfer the information from the short-term memory to long-term memory, making it more permanent in the child’s mind.

The education program is far more lenient than in other countries. For example, in Japan children go to school six days a week, and they don’t get summers off.

Also, last I checked, the homework is for the student to complete, not the parent. If most of the children in the class are having difficulty understanding the material, then it is the teacher’s fault. If, however, it is only your child and perhaps one or two others, you might consider the possibility that your child needs additional help outside of school, which is hardly the teacher’s fault. How much does your child read? How much did you read to him/her? Statistically, children who read more are far more likely to succeed in school.

My siblings and I are home educated, we’re unschoolers, so homework doesn’t exist in our house. To tell you the truth though, a *LOT* of what goes on in schools makes absolutely no sense to me!

However I do know that more and more private schools here are getting rid of homework; either they’ve abandoned homework altogether or have a “no homework on the weekends or during the holidays” rule; instead, they already make time for independent study during normal school hours (9am-3pm). They’re still churning out students who dominate the results’ tables etc ahead of those public schools who still cling to a “need” for homework though. I guess it has more to do with *HOW* the available time is used in school rather than simply the amount of time spent on school work.

Actually I did read an article in a newspaper here that claimed most teachers would love to do away with homework because they hate having to set it and mark it pretty much as much as the kids hate doing it! Teachers and Schools are apparently anxious about abandoning homework because they think parents expect their kids to get homework. In which case maybe you should talk to your children’s teachers…

I think students should have homework, but I know what you are talking about. Some teachers give students so much homework it’s horrible. I believe it’s the teachers that should be scrutinized instead of the students. In other words, I would not support a law to completely eliminate homework for students.

It is good that you are a parent that would help your children with their homework. But you could always do what my parents did and not help at all. I learned that there were consequences to not doing homework. And if I got bad grades, a lot of my priveliges were taken away so that I could spend more time doing homework. This was not always pleasant, but I’m glad my parents had high expectations of me. In answer to your question, I am not a fan of homework that is busywork but I think it teaches kids responsibility. But ultimately, your child’s homework is his or her responsibility.

No, that is absurd. Amerika already looks like a country full of drooling violent idiots to the rest of the world. While I agree that in some cases there is too much homework, it does serve a purpose.

Sorry, but I disagree with you. Students in ANY grade should have homework if they dont. Sure, teachers teach us. But, homework is something called “STUDY”. You are actually studying what you learned in your class.

And homework counts as a grade. So, I dont see why you hate it.

If you hate it so much, then dont do it at all.

*My parents dont help me at all. I need to do it myself*
