I think they need to start preparing them by running the junior and senior level courses like college classes. They should pass out a syllabus at the beginning of the year and expect them to keep up on reading. They need to lecture and give tests over lecture notes and reading instead of giving them simple little study guides that are just like the test. (Memorization is not learning.) More critical thinking and applied knowledge are needed.

As a relatively new high school teacher, I’ve learned that making students more responsible for their work helps them in the long run, even though their grades may suffer. It’s great for a 5th grade teacher to remind a student about homework all the time, but my 18-year-olds should know what they need to hand in and how to get help if they need it. My high school teachers always had this attitude, and it helped me a great deal in college because I took it upon myself to keep track of assignments and readings instead of waiting to be told.

Additionally, many schools need to improve college and career counseling, especially getting students to think about prepping for college before senior year. Guidance offices are usually so overwhelmed with scheduling and other issues that they can’t be in charge of all of it, so it falls to individual teachers, which has mixed results. A more focused effort from a unified department or group would help students prepare better.

I think that the schools need to give harder classes and make the parents get more involved!
