I don’t feel ready for school!!?

I start school on monday! I haven’t bought any notebooks to write on because i’m lazy, I still have one book (out of 5) to read for school but they give us a test like 2 weeks after we start so i”ll get a chance to read it after (i’m still scared dunno why)… And my mind is still on vacation, i don’t feel the enthusiasm like i used to before starting school!

What should I do? I’m an A student by the way in high school!

Well, it seems you know yourself pretty well. You say you don’t feel ready for school…..and it seems you know exactly why (look at the status report you gave us) and it seems you also know the root cause…laziness.

They say the being aware of the problem is the first step to the solution. So, what you need to do is NOT be lazy. But what will be your motivation to not be lazy? You should know yourself better than any of us.

You also mention you are afraid…but don’t know why. Hmmm, and you’re an “A” student. Let me see….an “A” student who is unprepared and school starts very soon…..seems the big unknown to be afraid of is not being able to perform at an “A” level when the tests come down in 2 weeks. The clue is your statement “I’ll get a chance”….hmmm, chance…that’s risky, like gambling….and hoping you will win. And maybe in the past you did “win” by getting “A’s” but it seems you are bright enough to realize that this “chance”, this “bet” is NOT a sure thing….nothing guaranteed right? And up to now you have gotten “A’s”….but statistical probability is against you to keep this up….ESPECIALLY WHEN you know you aren’t prepared.

OK, so you need to get prepared! NOW! Get out and buy all the school supplies you need to be ready for school on Monday! Go! Go! Go! (This is like sport parachuting…you don’t start packing the parachute as you jump out of the plane.)

Start reading the one book NOW! Don’t wait until school starts! Get the book NOW and start reading.

Get organized by making a time budget. As school starts, fill in a schedule chart to know when and where you will be and what you will be doing every hour of every day 24/7.

To manage your time or self in terms of use of time, start with a written “time budget”. Use some graph paper to make a chart of the days of the week (these will be column headings), and then all 24 hours of the day (these will be row headings).

Fill in the matrix (boxes) for every hour of every day of the week to see where you are spending your time. Start with the “fixed” blocks of time…those things you don’t control when they happen…sort like class time and work.

Then fill in the “non-fixed” activities…..eating, sleeping, commuting, studying, washing, cooking, cleaning, etc (all the other things in your life). Don’t leave any empty boxes…you need to account for how you spend every hour of every day in a typical week.

If you are like most students, it goes something like this:

1) there’s only 168 hours each week

2) most folks want 8 hrs of sleep/night, so -56 hrs / wk

3) class time (about 6 periods, 1 hr each, 5 days/wk) -30 hrs

4) say 1 hr of study outside class for each hr in class; -30 hr/wk (some folks need 2 hrs outside for each hr in class; that would be -60)

5) if you work part-time, a guideline is 20 hrs/ wk for a student with a full time load, so -20 hrs

At this rate, you could have 2-32 hours left to “spend” each week….but do you really?

figure 1 hr / day for washing up; -7 hr / wk

figure 2-3 hrs/ day for eating; -14 or 21 hrs/wk

figure 1 hr/day to commute to school; -3 or -5hrs/wk

then there’s shopping, appointments, dates, relaxation, family…wow…where does the time go?

Well, that’s the point of the schedule and time budget. When you see it all laid out on paper…you literally see where the time goes…now you can also begin to adjust, flex, cut, add, set priorities….do whatever to “manage” and take control over how you use time. This is much like money…at the start of the week, you have money in your wallet. At the end of the week, most folks are surprised how little is left in their wallet because they don’t remember spending so much. Most folks don’t write down how much they spend for what…and memories being what they are….well, so where did all the money go?

Get going guy! Time’s a wastin’! School starts Monday!

Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Issa, u don’t say what grade ur in? Sounds like Jr and Sr iotas… Hurray u did read 4 of the 5 books and two weeks will definitely have plenty of time to finish the last.

Ring binder with notebook paper is fine to write in, unless ur required to have notebooks. Being apprehensive if this is your last yr is very normal and common. Get around your friends who r excited to be going back. They often can get u in the mood. Think positive, get your clothes and things layed out the night before and put a smile in your heart. You’ll be fine. Enjoy high school as it goes quickly. If ur still blue, go see school counselor to offer you some options.

Well the other obtainable options, would be a lifetime of digging dtiches, or flipping burgers for minimum wage. See if that motives you any for school.

think about the people you’ll meet. and how fun it’ll be to criticize the teachers and food and stuff, think about sports teams…think about how you have only 2 or 3 years to go before uni..or just go to sleep..

Just get all your stuff, and think positive. Going back to school is easy as long as you dont think negative about it.

Think positive and think it is a new life for you…there is nothing else you can do about it so you may as well think positive
