I know that my son got at least an idea of what the DoI was last year in 2nd grade. I know because I had to make a business trip to DC in the fall (near the beginning of the school year) and all he wanted me to bring him was a copy of the Constitution and a copy of the Declaration. He brought them for show and tell upon my return. Quite the hit with the under 8 crowd….

There isn’t really any way to just scrape the top of our declaration on Independence. They know about Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July and they know they are in a free country, but it’s much later like in American History that you learn about it. Mostly because you have to MEMORIZE the whole darn thing and I don’t know if a 3rd grader would really even take into effect the real heart felt meaning behind our D of I.

I remember having to memorize the “when in the course of human events” paragraph in fifth grade. We also had to memorize the preamble to the constitution. I first learned about it in fifth grade I think. Then you do it again in eighth grade and tenth grade.

I learned about it in deeper levels each time because I pretty much had to have American History taught to me every other year.
