Teachers, what is your expectation for beginning of the year 1st graders? I feel like my students are very low
I feel like I am teaching Kindergarten! I know they are rising 1st graders, but I have 3 that can’t write their name, 10 that didnt pass the reading assessment for the start of the year, they have no idea how to add, and some of them can’t count past 20. Are my expectations to high or is this normal. I thought they would be able to start reading and writing, but they are NOT ready. Help! I can’t even start my SOLs yet….I’m in Virginia…

That is normal with first graders at the beginning of the year,
Now it’s up to you to plan your lessons organize your class and apply all the theories that you know in psychology,Teaching strategies and assessments.Due to the varied levels one suggestion is to group them in ability groups both for maths ans reading then plan your work accordingly.
