Should students be able to choose their own courses?
Does allowing students to have total control over what they take in school smart? Would these students abuse this power and choose easier course like art and gym?

Although, for the graduating classes after me, they give you a choice of 3 social studies classes junior year (world history to 1750, Psychology & Sociology, and something else I don’t remember).
However, science starting junior year is chosen by you (Freshman year, it depends on whether you’re in regular or honors). Science is optional senior year, but most people take one then anyway).
Math is somewhat optional junior and senior year. Like, as long as you’ve taken Algebra 2, you can do just about anything you want (as long as you take a math class, but the course – usually pre-calc or statistics – is up to you).
And foreign language has 3 choices: Spanish, French, and Latin.
So I have a decent number of choices in my school.
Guidelines :
– 4 years of English (any english course you want)
AP courses, Regular, Advanced
– 4 years of History (again, any course you want)
AP courses, Regular, Advanced
– 4 years of Gym (either dance or regular)
– 1 music or art class (any kind, can be taken any year or in summer school)
Music in our lives (current events in music), music theory, band, orchestra, pottery, art design, interior design, sculpture, Painting, just to name a few
My school offers about.. 30 or so electives on top of that. (Public School) So we have a lot of options. As long as you abide by the guidelines, you can pick any classes you want. Its rare to find someone taking the exact same classes as you.
