To keep or not to keep Calculus AB?

I’m a high school senior. I have a high D (almost an oxymoron) in Calculus AB. I failed the pre-requisite test badly, resulting in my low grade. I’m worried.

I’m in a dilemma. We have a test on Thursday based on 3 weeks of material (limits). I understand most of it, but I’m still shaky on drawing graphs without calculator and simplifying trig fractions.

If I don’t change my schedule tomorrow, I’ll be stuck in the class for the rest of the semester. If I fail this week’s test, I will fail for the entire 6 weeks, resulting in a very bad GPA. My GPA is currently around 4.2, and this sudden D or F will look terrible on my transcript.

Will dropping Cal AB hurt my chances for getting into a good college, especially if I want to major in Political Science and English?

Change your class. You will probably have to take some math in college later anyway.

I would personally drop it and take a different math or just take it easy. That’s an excellent GPA. I’m a high school senior as well (class of ’08 woohoo!! Sorry, gotta show my class pride). Last year I decided to take Dual Credit Pre Calc and regretted every bit of it. I somehow managed a C. I dropped the next semester, which was Calculus. I’m going to take DC Statistics in the Spring (DC = high school & college credit) Though taking such an advanced math course in high school is unusual (go us math nerds!) I would think it would look good on your transcript, even if it’s a low grade. It shows that you challenged yourself. Though with a D I’m not so sure….it all depends on how you feel about it. I highly doubt dropping Calc will hurt your chances of getting into a good college. Especially with that GPA! And majoring in English…I doubt it as well. You’ll probably have to take math in college anyways. Again, take it easy, senior year, don’t need to be stressing out! I only have 1 hard class at the moment out of 6. 1 I’m an office aid, 3 are electives (graphic arts, forensic science and speech) and the other is DC english but all we do in there is talk, 2 essays assigned and we’re 6 weeks into the school year. Good luck! And sorry about how much I get off track….it’s part of who I am….XD

Drop the class. Calculus has both scientific and business applications. Economics and government have their own math sciences that are directly related, like statistics and probability. Save your GPA for them and maybe take study hall. Schedule that time to work on your college essays and scholarship applications.

I do so aplaud you for not bailing just because things aren’t going well. Any college that you attend will be fortunate to call you their future alumni.

By the way, have you looked at University of Arkansas. Don’t judge them by the last weeks game. LOL They are a great school and awesome opportunities that prepare you for the future. http://visit.uark.edu/act/index.php

J.William Fullbright College of Arts and Sciences is named after their former president, strong supporter of international understanding and a noted statesman. Check out their website. http://fulbright.uark.edu/ and http://www.uark.edu/~arsc/info/fulbright.html

They also offer instate tuition to all bordering states.

Best Everything for you and yours,

nope! drop it like it’s hot, baby. honestly. I stuck with calculus and regret it. you should switch into AP statistics if you can. if not, idk-it’s up to you. if you think you can raise your grade up, then stick with it. if not. I would advise you to drop the class asap! good luck!
