Snakes can swallow animals bigger than themselves. How are they ABLE to do so? Snakes VARY greatly in thickness. Some are as thin as a chord but others, like a pyhton, may be as THICK as a man’s leg. Yet, all snakes can eat prey much bigger than themselves and they always swallow their prey WHOLE. The python is one of the largest snakes in the world. A cxase has recently been REPORTED of a python killing a stag WEIGHING about 56 kilogrammes and then devouring it. Such feats are POSSIBLE because the jaws of snakes are constructed very DIFFERENTLY from our own – or even from THOSE of any other animal for that matter. Our lower jaw is jointed to the upper jaw at ear-level, UNLIKE snakes which have an extra bone linking the ends of the two jaws so as to CREATE a double joint. Their upper and lower jaws can completely separate, ENABLING them to open their mouths very wide. BEFORE devouring its victim, the snake usually kills it either by GIVING it a poisonous bite or by WRAPPING itself tightly round the victim’s body.
