School League has denied my son to play baseball in his 5th year of high school – Trying to Appeal?

Son was in car wreck in his junior year and was home schooled and could not play sports. In his senior year his father and I felt he was not ready to graduate and decided to hold him back to improve on his academics. He just turned 18 in September and he will be 18 when graduates. So age should not be an issue. We are also asking the school board to let him play baseball since he did not get to play his junior year. He is not a superstar and neither is his baseball team so it has nothing to do with winning champhionships, which they are far from. We feel this will benefit him academically and will help him mature mentally and physically. He needs this extra year to improve his grades and extra time to decide his college major and career plans. Can someone please tell us what we need to do? Or is anyone out there that has or had the same problem?

Usually a high school student is eligible for four years. Also, since your son had the credits to graduate last year, he is only in school because of the kindness of the school system. They didn’t have to allow him another year when he could have already graduated. They’re putting out $10K to educate him for another year. I don’t understand why you think he’s entitled to more special treatment. Sign him up for a league team outside of school.

If you dont want to put him in the public school system maybe put him into a private school. A lot of the private schools around my area have better teams. Have him play in clubs also. He just needs to really keep practicing. They have some really good baseball summer camps. Some are even coached by former MLB baseball players. Best of Luck for him!!!

It all depends on the state athletic association. You might be able to get a petition going to influence their decision. In my state I believe students can play up until they are 19 in certain situations. Think about the kids that got held back in kindergarten, how would it be fair to them even if they only attended high school four years?

She who must had an excellent answer. You have already gained special privileges. He is now an adult and should be able to fend for himself. You are pushing this too much.
