what is the electronic configuration of chlorine and why???
it is 2,8,13,1.
according to the normal conventions, the e.c of Cl should have been 2,8,12,2. but Cl is unique. the energy difference between the last 2 shells of Cl is very small (almost negligible) and so 1 electron from the ‘N shell’ jumps to the ‘M shell’ and so 12 becomes 13 and 2 becomes 1.
this is also one of the reasons why Cl has a variable valency i.e.2 and 3.
