Probably because they go into high school feeling smaller than the rest of the high schoolers since they are the youngest. Not only that, you watch all these teen shows that show the freshmans always getting picked on and it is just in their head that that is what’s going to happen.

well pysically, most freshman are the smallest cause they are the youngest in high school!

also, being at the bottom of the high school ladder also kind of makes them seem ‘smallest’.
