Is this what America’s kids are coming to?

Thanks to the internet, things are so much easier than they used to be. Instead of spending hours at the library researching, with a few clicks of the mouse, you have all the information you need. But, it’s starting to get a bit out of hand if you ask me.

Today we were looking up words in a dictionary in Social Studies. Another girl who sits at my table was just looking at her paper while we were working. She said she didn’t know how to read a dictionary! Imagine that, a seventh grader who relies so much on websites like Dictionary.com she doesn’t know a simple first grade skill! She ended up copying from someone else….

What do you think about kid’s usage of the internet?

I am a bookworm. I love reading. I love research.

I am finding though that we really are in a transitional period when it comes to resources. There are so many available resources on the net that it really is much easier for people to get online and look it up that way.

Books are probably becoming a thing of the past. It breaks my heart, but it’s probably true. Resources like dictionaries and encyclopedias are kind of obsolete these days.

As for spelling, I know many adults who didn’t grow up in the computer age that have horrific spelling. They tell me that spell-check has saved their butts a number of times when it comes to writing letters and other things for business.

I think we’re going to have to learn to embrace technology. If we don’t, we’re going to be left behind.

What difference does it make whether she uses the dictionary or the Internet it is all the same information. Some people don’t have a dictionary. There is easy access to the Internet and computer skills are very important in this day and time. Plus the fact that they are learning to type.

Why not use the technology that is available.

It doesn’t say that the girl couldn’t read it said she couldn’t read the dictionary. If she can copy the work of someone else she can read. DUH

Unfortunately there is alot of children with to much “free time” on their hands. They are not being taught the responsibilities they need to make it through life like they should be. I would not allow the internet in my home until last month. My children are all in their teens and even though my oldest is 18 he is not as enthused with the internet as my 14 and 15 year olds are. And has only been on it maybe a total of 2 hours in the time we have had it. I limit my childrens use of the internet. I have seen plenty of children that aren’t even supervised out running around that should be. And there are alot of children that use the internet as their babysitter. There are too many parents that are not doing their jobs as a parent. I have seen children that have graduated high school in the past 5 years that do not know how to read, and that is a real shame. I think a childs usage of the internet should be very limited and also supervised, to mostly research for school and to further their advancement in education.

Totally ridiculous!! But read on…

I have an aunt who teaches public school kindergarten in TX, who made fun of my 5th and 6th graders studying for spelling tests (they attend private school). She said kids didn’t need spelling skills because all computers have abc word spell check!! I told her I thought spelling was important and it also teaches good study habits and discipline. She laughed at me.

I think you shouldn’t be allowd to use the internet for everything. I think for like reports and stuff you should have to use a book. Thast actually a rule at our school i think. and as for not knowing how to use books. you should ahve to write page numbers after the words.

it is ridiculous, im in 8th grade. this is a simple skill, i learned 2 read in kindergarden! now, if tis girl doesnt know how 2 read, she should have been held back until she did. ur right on the internet topic, but thats the problem; weve been born into technology that even in the early 80s they woudnt have possibly dreamed of!! but u r right

I can not understand if you are an old guy complaining about the “young whippersnappers” or young yourself.
