if a teacher has a good reason, such as the kids backpack smells funny, or some reason the kid might have something, then yes.

it should kinda be like how a police officer has to get a warrent from a judge before they search something

It seems to me that teachers have as much right to check what’s in a students backpack as security guards due to check what’s in someone’s bag at an amusement park; or what’s in someone’s luggage at an airport; or what’s in someone’s purse at a movie theater. After September 11, we lost the freedom of being able to be in posession of items that we would normally carry, because a select few did our country wrong. In schools, students lost a lot of their freedoms because a select few decided to bring guns to school and carry out school shootings.

Much like airlines are expected to protect passengers from hijackers on board airplanes by screening passengers and checking luggage, teachers are expected to protect students. Some teachers choose to do so by checking students backpacks, some schools check students lockers, some schools have done away with lockers all together (as was the case at my junior high school). Bottomline, don’t bring anything to school that violates school rules whether it’s a music player or a gun, and you’ve got nothing to worry about whether or not the teacher’s check your backpack.

Depends on the laws of your state and school. Some people have cited privacy laws and state no; however, with reasonable suspicion and/or permission of the parent they can search lockers and backpacks in they suspect dangerous items. There are fine lines between the rights to privacy and the responsibility to protect the rest of the students at the school.

When I was in high school, they didn’t check. As a result of that two wonder kids were killed.

I know there are specific laws stating that it’s ok for bag checks in schools, but now everyone just says it’s part of the patriot act.

I know it’s frustrating but it’s for your own safety.

If your asking due to sales, put in in your in an empty ipod case.

Yes.

ie Columbine, V Tech and other shooting /stabbings that have happened on campus.

It’s not b/c we’re nosy. We don’t want anyone getting hurt and/or killed.
