I’m starting highschool in a little over a week. Any advice in particular?

I’ll be starting at SAMOHI on September 5, and though I’m super excited- craaaazy excited- there are still things I’m nervous about. Classes include Japanese, English HP, Geometry, Biology, Freshman Seminar (History/Health/etc.), and Volleyball. Any advice regarding classes or anything else- really, anything- is greatly appreciated. :]]

Well in high school, things are a lot bigger. Like the students, teachers, and buildings. You also get more homework than junior high but don’t let that get you down. Millions of students like you are entering high school for the first time. And it can be scary. But just relax. Just be yourself and you can make some life-long friendships. You can make some friends by joining in some after school clubs and sports. And also just by talking to the person beside of you. You can compliment on something they have to strike up a conversation. Also, in high school, you know you have more homework than junior high. So be prepared to do that. Be organized and don’t procrastinate. Doing that will make you feel behind in your classes and you can’t catch up. Just pay attention to your teacher’s lectures, take good notes, and do your homework first before crashing onto the computer. Have a schedule with you or a to-do list. Prioritized your things and tackle big assignments one at a time. And have some fun too. High school is one of the best years of your life. Make it like that and you will enjoy high school.

When I was a sophomore last year, I was scared too. I was the shortest person in my high school. But I got used it and now, I’m used to being around taller people.

good luck!

I just started my senior year last week, so I’ve experience. There are two things you need to keep an eye on. One, don’t let yourself fall behind too far. If you slip too far, you may wind up being unable to bring yourself back up, or, you’ll find yourself under a huge pile of work. But two, don’t forget to have fun. The best way to get rid of any stress from school is to enjoy your time off, especially the weekends and holidays. Other than that, just stay focused and try to set some goals to reach for. Good luck.

I’m a Junior in high school.

My advice? Don’t take more than what you can handle but challenge yourself–push past your limits. Keep on top of your homework and don’t procrastinate. If you aren’t sure on something then ask the teacher–what other place to get help for a class than the person teaching it? Take good notes and fit in adequate study time for your classes. Use your planner handed to you by the school and don’t use it. I would not advise blowing off on your academics but get into some extra-curriculars as well. Most importantly, don’t make high school work, work, work–include some fun time in.

Alrighty. Here’s what I learned throughout this year (I was a Freshman): Upperclassmen- don’t really bother you unless you have older friends, and they’ll just tease you a little bit. If you’re walking down the hallway, no one will knock your books out of your hands and whatnot. And don’t say things like, “My SENIOR friend” or “My friend who’s a JUNIOR” unless someone asks. Classes- PAY ATTENTION AT ALL COSTS. I didn’t pay attention one day in Algebra and now I have summer school. Math ESPECIALLY, unless you’re a wiz at it. If you are gone during a day of classwork, make it up! Not making up classwork can really bring grades down. If you’re going to be gone during a day of a test, find a date to make it up or do it ahead of time. It’s very important! Organization/Supplies- I suggest a small binder for each class. One big one probably can’t hold 4-6 notebooks. And be sure to clean it out at the each quarter, but never during the same quarter. I’ve had friends who did that and regretted it when finals came up. You can use tab dividers or 1-3 folders for a class. Usually your teacher will tell you what to use for their class. Of course, clean out your binder at teacher’s discretion. Also, be careful with lending pencils. I didn’t lend the same person a pencil twice unless they returned it the first time. I’m sure you don’t need a supplies list this early in the summer. Attitude- If you’re shy, TRY to be somewhat talkative. I’m terribly shy myself, and often was taken advantage for it (such as people cheating off me, because they knew I wouldn’t tell the teacher or shoo them away). Or, if you’re outgoing, DON’T make a ton of outbursts in class. Sometimes they can be funny and enlighten moods, and sometimes they can be plain irritating. Know your place to talk. Additional- DON’T be immature (ie. throwing grapes at people) in a rude manner. If you are joking around, don’t make a sexual joke every other sentence (though this may not apply to you). Only 300 students seems like a very small school. My high school has about 1,600 students, but rumors go around fast. Try not to do regrettable things, but keep in mind we all make mistakes. _______ In case you don’t know what I mean by freshman, sophomore, ect., here: 9th grade- Freshman 10th grade- Sophomore 11th grade- Junior 12th grade- Senior

Take High School one day at a time enjoy it, you are suppose to; however, make sure you set time aside to study. High School is where school really starts to matter, im not saying that school doesn’t matter before than it does. But if your looking to get into to a Collage and get away from your parents, and take that first step as a true adult, you need the Grades. So all in all enjoy High School its fun, get organized, and if u can do that I can tell u this College will be simple, and if u thought High School was good, its nothing like College!

First of all I am SO jealous you are taking Japanese….I wish they offered it at my school….I want to learn it so bad.

Advice: If you are nervous about stating: DON’T BE! everyother freshman there is completly new there too. High school is really not that scarry. Sometimes it can get hard, but it is nothing you can’t do. As long as you stay on top of your game you will do fine…the only hard part of freshman year is getting used to everything….the work load doesn’t start to be unbearable until junior year….

Oh, and one last thing: DON’T BE SOMEONE YOU ARE NOT!!!!

Good luck this year…I’m sure you will do fine! 🙂

It sounds like you are a very intelligent person. The best advice is “Be your self”.Stick to your morals and to your goals and don’t be influenced by someone that may have a different agenda for being there. “Observe- Observe” and make good choices about who you align yourself with. Good Luck
