How can I teach my second grader to write better?

My son is in second grade and constantly gets bad marks in handwriting. The teacher has sent home tons of worksheet that is supposed to help him write better. He does better here at home, writing pretty much neat, but when he gets back at school, his writing is sloppy again. Plus, even when he does write neat, it takes him forever….sometimes an hour for six vocabulary words and definitions. I have tried everything…grounding from games, not letting him play, making him do more homework…etc., but nothing seems to work. I’m having such a meltdown, because I have no idea of what else to do. All of his teachers say that he is the smartest kid in their class, but he mostly just wants to be funny and hurries his work. He’s very good at math…he could add and subtract before school, and has known his single digit multiplication table since 1st grade. Plus, he can figure out video games and beat them within hours. So why can’t he just write well? Oh, he has problems drawing too

My son is in 1st grade he was having trouble holding a pencil they ended up using a grip to help him hold his pencil right this might be a problem with your son as well but you said he does good at home to .

There maybe to many distraction’s in the classroom .

I would have a meeting or try talking to the teacher about your concerns !

I agree with the first response. It may have a lot to do with the classroom environment or where your son is sitting. Definitely set a meeting time with the teacher. Another thing to try is a program called Handwriting Without Tears. I think it’s expensive but worth the investment. Good luck! These type of things tend to iron themselves out with time.
