dress code policy in schools?

Have any of you ever had a problem with the dress code policy in high school? I went to a public high school and it was a while back and had two incidences with that. My mom brought it up in a conversation we were having somehow. Anyway, there was one time I wore shorts that were within the regulations no more than three inches above the knee and one teacher said my shorts were not in regulation and sent me to the office and then my mom had to bring me new pants. Another time I got in trouble for a blouse which I had buttoned up, not see through, not revealing, not too lose. I felt it was best not to argue. My mom said that those particular teachers were out to get me or just did not like me. I was an excellent student and always nice to my teachers and fellow students. Who do you think would have been right in a situation like this?

Personally, I’ve never cared about seeing people not follow the dress code. And personally, I wear jackets and jeans all year long… that’s just me, I don’t mind what other people do.

The teacher could be out to get you, or could have been having a bad day…

One teacher at my school, the only teacher you had to worry about in the whole school, would stand in the hallways and send random people to the office and home… everyone knew not to walk down that hallway if you were wearing short shorts or jeans with holes in them or anything that was even a wee bit off the dress code.

Eventually the teacher actually got told off by the office. 🙂 They told her to mind her own class room and stop messing with kids in the halls.

I disagree. I really don’t think the teachers in question were “out to get you” or “just didn’t like you”–teachers have more important things to do than to pick on students especially regarding the dress code. More than likely, they were following orders from the school administrators. I think it’s always a good idea to follow the rules and to be respectful to school personnel including teachers, administrators, staff, custodians and fellow classmates. I’m sure it was embarrassing to you and an inconvenience to your mother. But, like it or not, in the real world of the workplace, you will have rules to follow and you will also have a dress code. So, this is a good lesson to learn while in high school. In the future, you may want to ask about the dress code and have it explained to you so that you understand and follow it accordingly. If wearing shorts is a problem to school personnel, try wearing jeans with an appropriate tee shirt. After all, you’re only having to follow the dress code while you’re in school; you can dress any way you want on your own time, away from school.

I feel like no midriffs showing, no booty shorts or cut off shorts to where the pockets hang out of the leg hole, no baggy jeans (for safety reasons) and such are a good dress code. Just because some parents will allow their kids to wear that doesn’t mean they should and I am glad that my kids won’t have to be subjecte to the sexual side of what all can be displayed with clothing like that. After all anyone in a school with a dress code is a teenager or younger and has no business to dress that way anyway. I have a hard time being in the mall and a group of 11 year old girls have thongs hangning out and dropping the f bomb 10 times in one sentence. I feel the dress code doesnt limit my kids clothing choice as I wouldnt allow them to wear short or tight clothing even if it were allowed. Shorts is one thing but there is such a thing as ‘too short’ Im glad schools ban graphic pictures or drug pictures on t shirts as drugs are illegal anyway so no parent should let their kid support it. Laws aren’t out of the question like you replied to another post, they are there to keep everyone safe. No drinking and driving, no illegal drugs all the laws make sense, why should others suffer or die in a car accident because the driver of the other car is ignorant

I can’t answer that question because I didn’t hear both sides of the story. What I will say is that is the reason that a lot of schools are going to uniforms. It’s a shame when parents can’t figure out what to dress their kids in. If schools are going to use a dress code, it has to be ver precise. For example, if your shorts were the wrong length, did anyone measure them? They either were or weren’t the right length. What was the problem with the blouse? Was there a rule against the type of blouse that was worn? Actually they seemed to be more on the ball in your district than in mine. The reason we have gone to uniforms is because of the outlandish things kids wore and because teachers didn’t enforce the dress code.

The Dress Code policies violate the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, which protects the absolute right to freedom of expression on property which you own (which of course includes public property, which is owned by everybody).

You should simply ignore teachers who complain about dress code violations or just decide to skip the rest of the class. Just ignore it and don’t even justify it with a response or give them a response they don’t like.

You have to be strong enough to stand up to bullies and not give them any of the satisfaction that they want or they’ll keep bullying you.

Break the dress code on purpose if you want and absolutely refuse to follow it.

It isn’t best not to argue. It is best to stand up to anybody who is bullying you. You need to demythologize “authority figures” and treat them the same way you’d treat somebody else making some claims.

It’ll probably make you more popular around the school, plus it would also be certain to make teachers less likely to accuse you of breaking the unconstitutional dress code.

That is school ettiquette.

To be observe by the student in going to school.

Pride of the school on their performance too.

Ever wonder why children at loss and blurr on what school ettiquette is all about?

Look around at the mess they were doing to their own school in doing things at own whims and fancy in kicking the school.
