Do you think they give high schoolers too much homework?

I sure do. I’m a freshman myself. I get a lot of homework every week, and I have atleast 1 orr 2 tests every week.

I’m currently taking a break from this huge huge huge history assignment due in about a week and a half…i have to take notes on a bunch of long chapters (finished) and then i have to identify about 30 events/people in description, and then i have to answer 16 questions in paragraph form.

i’m in pre-IB classes, but i would rather not switch out, seeing as most of the better people seem to be in these classes.

so what’s your opinion? ;/

Are you thinking that it’s going to get lighter in college?

Hint – it’s not. Not by a longshot. I have a lot of great memories from college, but none of them include a full night of sleep.

Honestly, you chose the honors classes for a reason…because you want something more than average out of life. Well, the way you get that is by putting in the work. What you’re doing now, even though it cuts into your free time, will serve you well later in life.

And honestly, that really isn’t that much. In my honors courses (way back in the dark ages – the late 80s), I would have had that long of an assignment given on Monday, due on Wednesday or Thursday. In my AP Lit, I had a novel, 2-3 plays or long poetry selections, 200 pages of a novel such as War and Peace, every week…on top of a paper, a movie critique, and two essay tests. That was one class. My AP History, I had one or two 30-40 page chapters to outline and prepare (we each taught a section of the lesson in discussion format), a paper, an essay test, and fairly complicated mapwork – plus outside reading – every week. However, I was in classes with kids who actually wanted to learn, I got out of college classes by being a TA, and I received several perks for my work. Looking back, it was worth it.

No, high schoolers should not be given less homework. This is when you get your first taste of adult life. Are you going to tell your boss, years down the road, that you think your presentation or report shouldn’t have to be as detailed as they require? If you don’t learn to do the work now, you won’t be able to do it later…and you’ll be stuck with a life of never being able to accomplish what you want to.

That really isn’t that much…and as long as it isn’t busy work that doesn’t enhance learning at all I don’t think it shouldn’t be given out. Homework is basically an extension of classes so that more can be covered and discussed in class. Either that or recap so that you can be sure you understand everything. I don’t particularly like homework myself–and am a huge procrastinator–but I can see the point of the general idea and can normally see the point of most assignments that are handed out.

My opinion is that if they were to cut out all the unnecessary non-academic items that the high schools are littered with, they could 1. spend the time needed to teach the subjects, and cover the materials during school hours, and 2. most students could finish a high school program in approximately two years, or less, giving the students plenty of time for work experience, and college preparation.

No! however, I did when I was in high school and I am now a junior in college…High school believe it or not really prepares you for college and the real world…if you think its hard now, just wait until college. I am not talking down on you and I dont think your complaining, I think coming from the high school level it is normal to feel that way..however, try 4 tests in one day, 3 papers ( one that is 30 pages long) and a reading assignment along with 2 very looong labs..now that is hard! But hang in there..before you know it this year will be behind you and remember you are one step closer to graduation, college

Yeah, I’m in high school (but I’m not a freshman) and I sure felt that way when I was. It was incredibly tough for me then, because I’m the HUGEST procrastinater possible. Like, ever. But starting sophomore year, I actually began to manage my time well and was able to fit in a few more extracurriculurs. Try to set up a schedule for homework or somehting. And if that still doesn’t work, maybe you could talk to your counslours (sorry i’m not very good at spelling) or teachers that are bogging you down with homework. Well, I know at my school, at least, the teachers are decent, so they’ll understand. I hope yours would too!

I’m in IB as well. I wonder if you go to Turner in Canada? I feel like I dn’t belong either. I was the top student in grade 5, but I don’t work as hard anymore. We don’t get much, but it seems like it since, you’re not used to it. I’m a freshman too, and get the same workload you do. I don’t get much time for myself anymore, but I know we’ve got to get used to it

Sounds like you’re a whiny brat who’s never had to work for anything before.

Just wait until you get to the REAL world where you have to do everything or you’ll starve!
