I think, if it is late enough in the year and something stupid happens (like someone slashes the tires on the bus, pours honey in the door locks, teepe’s the school in toilet paper, gas freezes in the buses etc. (my school has had all of these happen)), and you have no snow days, then yes, yes I do think school should replace summer vacations. It if is early in the year, say before the last two monthes of school, then it should be taken out of your regular school vacations first. The thing is, that in the U.S. (and in other countries I’m sure) we have a required amount of days that we have to go to school, and if your school’s built in snow days are all used up and you miss additional days of school, you have to make them up.

Last school year (my 10th grade year), we used up all of our snow days for various problems not just including the snow (because yes, I do live in the north so we have about five, six days of built in leeway). However, because of past problems with seniors, we were all afraid the last month and a half of school that they would do something stupid (like the aformentioned tires), and that we would have to come back in after our State required tests and just sit in the building all day with nothing to do, as our summer vacation starts after the week of exams in the highschool (and these exams are statewide on each day and so can not be rescheduled). It turned out that nothing happened, but it had all of the teachers telling us not to do anything stupid like that the entire time, and had even the freshmen telling kids not to do something stupid, as after those exams there is no point in trying to learn anything new before summer. In fact, before the senior prank and everything, I had teachers saying that they would refuse to come in if any extra days were required in the highschool, and the general consensus was that we (the highschool students) would not be coming back if it happened, as a)you gonna round up a bunch of rebelious teens? and b)the school couldn’t force families to cancel plans because of it, and most of the students had vacations planned for right after the last day of exams.

So while I am a student and can see where you are coming from (I was amongst the group telling people how stupid it was that we would have to come back if the seniors did anything), I still agree with the super-intendant of your school in forcing you to go back during summer vacation. Unless you’re a highschool student in NY, then I fully agree with you.

How many days of summer did you really miss out on because of snow days? In West Virginia, we are required to have 180 days of instruction. We have a few days built into our schedule so we can miss a few days due to snow and not have to make them up. However, if we miss so much time, then we add those days onto the end of the school year. We went to school until June 11th last school year. We added maybe 5 days. I think you can deal with that. You sound like one of my middle school students. Nothing ever seems fair. Well, sweetheart, life is not fair. Deal with it!

Unfortunately, schools are required to be in session for a certain number of days during the year in order to receive federal and state funds. So it’s not like the schools are trying to punish the kids, they actually have no choice. Besides, it’s usually only a few days difference you can handle it. Wait until you’re an adult and start working for a living and are lucky if you get any sort of vacation for years at a time. Enjoy being a kid and try not to complain it will all be over soon enough.

No, I do not think the children should have to make up the snow days from their summer vacation.

No one can help what nature gives us during the winter months. Have a set day for school to go out, and close schools when that day arrives.

in places where snow days are a possibility, there are a certain number allowed per year. if there are more than the allowed number of snow days used, yes they have to be made up. states have a minimum number of days school must be in session in order to keep federal aid and excess snow days that would put your state below this minimum number of days need to be made up either from shortening the spring break or extending school for a few days. it’s usually not more than a day or two. better that than have to try and get to school in a blizzard or on ice coated roads that put everyones safety at risk!

Sorry, but in all states you have to go to school for a certain number of days per year, usually 175 to 180. 3 snow days are usually factored into the school year calender, but of more then that are used, them the school year end date must be extend. Several years ago several towns in WV lost two weeks due to heavy snow and cold, and had to go to June 29th.

Well, if you have too many snow days (like 10 in a year) I think that at least some of those should replace summer break. It’ll take too much school away if they don’t.

Snow days are not holidays. If you had a job and you miss a day of work your work will still be there when you go back, so you have to work more to make up for it. Welcome to life.

Um, honestly? I don’t think that’s fair. I think they should replace snow days with some other holidays, like idk….Some days of spring break? lol…not sure.
