Do you have to be Catholic to teach in a Catholic school?

I’m teaching a computer class in a Catholic school for only one hour/day on top of my public school teaching schedule. (I just found out today and school starts next Tuesday.) I’m not Catholic, nor do I go to church. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar situation.

Nope. My best friends (husband and wife) taught in a Catholic high school for years. Neither is Catholic. In fact, the husband is atheist.

Both also graduated from a Catholic university. As a joke, one of the priests would fling extra incense smoke and holy water at the husband during required masses.

Usually yes, you have to be catholic but more often than not it depends on the school as some are more liberal than others but for the most part they won’t hire you if you are not catholic. My wife teaches at a catholic school and not only does she have to be catholic but she has to go to church on sundays as well in order to keep her job.

I am not sure about all countries but in the United States and most other countries you do not have to be Catholic to teach in a Catholic school.

All teachers are asked to sign a pledge acknowledging the fact that “because all employees represent the Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.”

Please take this pledge seriously.

With love in Christ.

as long as you don’t have to have their point of view, I don’t see why not,but if you have to teach something you do not believe in then I would say no,there are many lay teachers teaching in Catholic schools but they are Catholic. My son went to a Catholic school and we are not Catholic but he did not need to take religion as a subject, that was 25 yrs ago and now even if you are not Catholic you must take THEIR religion courses.needless to say,if he were going togo into a school today it would not be that school!

Yes my hubby taught in a Catholic school for 3 years. We are Methodist. He did go to mass with his students and knelt to pray etc. He would go to the front for the eucharist- however when he got to the priest he crossed his arms over his chest(a sign that is is not eligible to take communion) the priest would bless him. He was very happy there and they loved him
