Can i go back to high school?

okay so, last year i was out for the second semester due to some family issues. my mom and i had moved out of state unexpectedly, and she wasn’t sure how to transfer me into an out of state school. so she didn’t. and we just now moved back to my home state. and since the first half of this semester is already over i wasn’t sure when i could go back. i’m very far behind and need to get back as soon as possible so i can graduate. my question is basically; will they let me back in to public school even though i was gone so long, i’m 16 btw. and i was also wondering if anyone knows about credit recovery progams. i will have to go to night and summer school to catch up, which is going to be like school 24/7. but i’m not sure if that will be enough so i would appreciate info on that. this is my junior year and i completely understand how hard it will be to fully catch up if i can even do that, but i’m totally willing

I teach in an alternative school in Boston and the answer is a big YES! You can always go back to school, but it is important that you are focused and dedicated. Most bigger school systems have alternative schools or programs to help you get back into school and even stay on schedule for graduation. Some programs are school-to-career, whereas others have shorter school day schedules to help you work enough hours in the afternoon or even just stay motivated (it’s amazing how much easier it is to go to school everyday when you get out at 12:30!). Many of these programs have application processes which range from financial and criminal background information (which can help you fulfill a grant that funds the school, like in my school where we have 5 spots for students who have been in Boston Juvenile Court, and so on) to a grade equivalency test to make sure you can complete the work that will be asked of you at the school.

I would talk to the people at your former school. It may be easiest just to re-enroll you in that school and then go to night and summer school to get you to graduate, but you may also want to look at alternative programs if you think a smaller classroom environment will help keep you motivated. Your school admissions people and guidance counselors should be able to talk you through all of this, and can give lots of info to your mom to help both of you decide. Whatever you choose, stay focused and keep your head up. I hope this helps!

Yes! They will let you back in. If your Mom isn’t motivated to help you then just make a call to the high school and set up an appointment with a counselor. He/she will help you with all your questions and give you the support you need.

It’s great that you are willing to catch up and continue your education. You need to call your local school or Board of Education and talk to someone there. Do whatever they say and graduate! The best of luck to you.
