You have time to research this so here are some references that would help you. Go to www.aiga.org which is the American professional organization for design. They have articles and information and design careers and design education.
Maybe get a subscription to HOW magazine. It covers a wide range of design issues but it is accessible for a beginner to understand and enjoy.
A good book that provides clear explanations of career options is Becoming a Graphic Designer: A Guide to Careers in Design. The author is Steven Heller.

A friend of mine was an art director and he designed Marineland of the Pacific many years ago. Probably not today, someone else did that.
Art directors work for architects, movie studios, commercial producers, ad agencies.
