Fundraising for trip?

I want to go to China with the People to People organization. I would need around $7,000 (without pocket money) to get there, and I can only get $3,000 from my family. I have no idea what I could do to raise that much money. I’m 15 and a half and I don’t have much money from my summer job left. Any ideas of what I could do?

Sorry Kiddo,

I’m assuming you want to go soon? If so, you might be out of luck. At 15, there are very few legal things you can do to raise $4-5000 in a short period of time.

As the other person said, a garage sale, or ebay blitz might garner you a grand. Baby-sitting should get you a grand for every 50 nights or so that you sit.

Collecting recyclable’s is fairly unrewarding – a whole day of scrounging might bring $10-$20. Unless you can find copper – copper is really bringing a good price right now. Look for old wire. $250 for 100lbs.

Wrap presents for cash. I made $200 wrapping presents for a couple of friends last year, and had a lot of fun. Have your folks tell their friends. I’d also recommend a Dec 21st cut off date – the very last day anyone can bring you presents to wrap. I charged $2 for a small box, $3.50 for a medium box, and $5 for a large box. I provided the paper, but if they want to use their own, fine, give them a discount.

Dog walking, or Poop services are often popular in richer neighborhoods, and you can charge a pretty good rate for cleaning poop.

Get a newspaper route that matches the dog route and make twice the money.

If you have a purebred dog or cat, or an exotic animal like a chinchilla or ferret, or lizard or whatever, and it isn’t fixed, you could try breeding it for profit. Local pet stores will often buy said animals.

Bake sales. Lot of work, but you can make pretty good money with one.

Ask your church or other group organization for help. Often, for something like this, a collection might be taken to help you out.

Good luck!

I know some people who raised quite a bit of money by collecting empties/recyclables. They just drove around collecting beer bottles/cans from the ditches along the backroads. Then again they probably made tons of money because my town is hick-ville where you just chuck your empties in the nearest field. You could try to organize a bottle-drive – maybe with your school if they were open to helping you.

You could have a garage sale. Do chores for neighbours like raking leaves/gardening. Babysitting’s a good option.
