Raising a reader?

My 10 year-old step-son despises reading. His grammar and spelling skills are not great, either. He is currently in the 4th grade and is reading at a 2nd grade level, according to his teachers (I suspect that it might be even lower than that).

This is the first year he has lived with my husband and I, who now have custody. Until now, he has attended 5 schools (in 4 years) and has had a very unstable environment. We have had custody of him for the past 4 months and he is thriving in most every area… except reading. We read for 30 minutes a night. Sometimes we write our own stories, sometimes he reads to me, sometimes I read to him.

I have a feeling that it’s a lack of basic phonics education – he isn’t able to spell well or read words by sounding them out, as you would expect a 10 year-old to be able to do.

Anyone have any advice or resources on raising him to be a better reader? He doesn’t have to love it, I just want him to see the benefits and improve.

When I was younger both my brother and I attended an afterschool program with a specialist (I believe her title was speech pathologist, but that could be incorrect) for reading, grammar and speaking. She had a program of developing sound/letter recognitions. I was 9 when I went, my brother was 7. I still struggle with spelling, but we both are huge readers now and my brother has a great grasp of grammar, phonics and spelling.

Keep encouraging him and showing him the worlds inside books. If he wants to learn phonics or improve his reading skills, it will be so much easier than if he’s already learned that books are “boring.”

I have a step-son who is now in 8th grade and I experienced a situation similar to yours when he was in third grade… I went to the Special Reading teachers in our dist. and they gave me a lot of ideas including having him read anything that interested him such as sports articles, cartoons etc… as long as he was reading and we made a point on weekends to designate 30 minutes of family reading time- dad read the paper, mom read her latest book, sister too, etc. We had to model it for him- can’t say it worked 100% but it did make a difference- go to his school and make an appointment with a reading teacher- see if they can help- good luck!
