Um… that is a job for a certified school psychologist. And further more, I don’t know of any “short” developmental tests. If you are teaching pre-school I would go with them just where they are and get some profession assistance if you have concerns for the kids that seem “slow”. Two year olds should know some basic colors, how to generally put their clothes on (but not fasten or zip things), they should be learning to use the potty on their own and they should know how to use a cup or be on their way out of using a sippy cup. As for “knowledge” – they don’t have much. They are calling all fuzzy animals dogs regardless of if they are cats or sheep or whatever. They call all flying things birds, etc… they have a lot to learn.

The kids you need to watch out for are the ones that have major seperation issues (they cry uncontrolably when they leave their parents), they have no clue or interest in socializing with other kids or they are violent to other kids or nature.

The Ages and Stages Questionaire is good. Its easy for one person to administer and its quick. It covers all five areas of development. You’ll probably need some parent input, but that should be easy.

I would try asking your doctor to recommend a child psychologist who does testing. You can also contact a University or your local school system.
