Intent means you had some sort of motivation or reason to commit the crime. For example, a husband kills his wife and his intent was that she was cheating on him, or he wasn’t allowed visitation with his children. Police often use intent as a way of picking suspects based on “who had a reason to kill or hurt the person.”

Opportunity means, did the person have a chance to kill someone. Using the previous example, the husband may have been at the wife’s house shortly before the murder so he has the chance to kill her. It doesn’t mean he DID, but the opportunity was there.
