not at all, just more traveled then you. there are still patch switchboards in use in the world. besides anyone who ever watched Nick at night or the Twilight Zone has seen plenty of shows with patch switchboards. And it sounds more personal to say then “please connect me with extension 1234 etc”.
Also you may note that the space station has to be “patched” to the ground phone system when the people make phone calls up or down from the space station. Also in many military comms systems.
