Should the Black people change the name of their school?
The school is now 90% black students and the name of the school is named after a man who owned slaves back in 1780. Do you believe they should change the name of the school?

I don’t think that the name of the school is an issue unless the students feel that it is. If they do think it’s an issue then maybe there should be a vote to change it. If it’s not an issue then leave it as it is.

Not really. If he had a particularly bad history with black people, I’d say they can change it if they want to. But for merely owning slaves? The past is a foreign country–they do things differently there. A lot of people owned slaves. Even Thomas Jefferson, who tried unsuccessfully to get language put in the Constitution that would eventually lead to slaves being freed, was a slave owner.
While slavery was a bad institution and it is embarassing that the US was one of the last civilized countries to outlaw the practice, you can’t come to the conclusion that all slave owners are evil men. Maybe someday affirmative action will be judged by history as racist–surely every person who benefited from it wouldn’t be a racist! It’s the system we have–if it’s wrong we can try to change it, but you still have to live in the system to some extent while it is around.

No, It’s just a name. If they are getting a good education there, the name shouldn’t matter.
