Night Essay?

Critique please:

Prompt: One of the most tragic themes in Night is Eliezer’s discovery of the way that atrocities and cruel treatment can make good people into brutes. Does he himself escape this fate?

Response:

Despite the difficult circumstances, Eliezer has been consistent to his morals. He is ashamed of the actions taken by some to ensure their own survival, and at times, he even criticizes himself. After struggling to survive day to day, not knowing what will happen next, every person is forced to make decisions that test one’s will and strength.

On the way to Buchenwald, Rabbi Eliahou asks Eliezer if he had seen his son. Eliezer realizes that the Rabbi’s son, in attempt to free himself from the burden of his weak and feeble father, ran as quick and as far away as possible from his own father. In order to free himself from an impediment that could greatly reduce his own chances of survival, he sought separation and left his ailing and limping father. Eliezer, embarrassed

You present good points and excerpts from the book.

You just need to clearly state your answer yes or no to the question, before you list the points/examples explaining your viewpoint (I would delineate these examples clearly, introducing each point that defends your answer), and then close your essay by recapping it again on a conclusive note, perhaps elaborating on how he became an even better, more humane person for his decisions. So the reader can tell from reading your first and last sentence what your answer is, and each of the supporting points are clearly enumerated and not run together.

From your essay answer, it seems you would argue he not only escaped the trap of becoming a brute, but in fact grew in strength and character for having faced these challenges and consciously decided to act humanely and selflessly. You could say that his moral decision to choose those spiritual qualities of life over mere physical survival demonstrates that he purposely fought against the temptation to do as others did, and not only survived but came out a better person for it.
