Unless you are exceptionally gifted and know how to read drum music , I would suggest lessons. In lessons, you get someone who can physically show you what/how to set it up, hold the sticks, set your seat, etc.(no seat for a snare for a marching band) The teach yourself method might work for someone who already has an idea of what’s going on. However there is no substitute for a “hands on” pro being at your side. . So, unless money is a drawback,or lessons are too inconvenient, I would say “lessons”

I learned on my own and didn’t take lessons and went on to play in a band that palyed in night clubs and small venues. It took about a year and a half before I performed in public. I listened to records and learned by trying to play along with them.

Some people have a natural ability to play musical instruments, but its always best to take lessons if you want to be serious about it. That applies to all musical instruments.

I suggest getting some lessons, but pick your teacher assertively. Also know that there is so much you could learn by yourself with instructional videos and booklets.
