Even if your scores or GPA were not very stellar, look into the scholarships that are essay-based. These essays you have a chance at because very few students will go to the extra work needed to apply for these because of the writing. At my son’s college there were actually a few essay-based scholarships that were not given away because no one turned in an essay. Just think, you could have barely squeaked in based on admissions guidelines and still get a scholarship if you are willing to write.

To learn what scholarships are available, ask the financial aid or admissions office. Often, a college’s handbook will also list what ones are available annually.

Then apply to those you may qualify for.
